exploring madness

There was a panel on mental illness at the DC Zine Fest this past weekend. It was interesting to hear how these women and queers were coping with their own shit through zines and comics.

The panelists spoke briefly on the social construct around “mental illness” and “wellness”, how that fits into capitalism through the pharmaceutical, medical, and health & wellness industries. The topic mental illness and creativity also came up, along with the trope of the tortured artist.

In response, some people are referring back to being “mad” and “madness” in order to reclaim that language and start a discussion around radical health care. I find the language and paradigm refreshing and much needed.

So, I am going to begin to explore my own madness and the work of other mad people.
